How to Measure Your Head for a Wig

A beautiful wig can still feel wrong if the cap does not fit. Measuring your head before choosing a wig size is one of the simplest ways to improve comfort, security and the way the hairline sits.

You do not need special equipment. A flexible cloth measuring tape, a mirror and a few quiet minutes are enough. The most important thing is consistency.

Before You Measure

Wear your natural hair as flat as reasonably possible. Bulky buns, ponytails or clips can change the measurement and make the cap seem larger than it really needs to be.

Use a soft measuring tape made for sewing or body measurements. Keep the tape snug against the head without pulling it tight enough to compress the skin. Take each measurement at least twice and write down the result.

1. Measure Your Head Circumference

Circumference is the measurement most commonly used when choosing a general wig size. Start at the center of your front hairline. Bring the tape around the side of your head, behind the ear area, down around the nape, behind the opposite ear and back to the starting point.

Keep the tape level and close to the head. If you take the measurement three times and get slightly different numbers, repeat it until you can identify the most consistent result.

2. Measure Front to Nape

Place the tape at the center of your front hairline and run it over the top of your head to the center of the nape. This measurement helps describe the length of the cap from front to back.

Do not stop too high on the back of the head. The nape point should reflect where you would naturally want the lower edge of the wig cap to sit.

3. Measure Ear to Ear Over the Top

Measure from the top area of one ear, over the crown, to the same point on the opposite side. This gives additional information about the width and shape of the head.

Depending on the wig or custom fitting process, you may also be asked for an ear-to-ear measurement across the forehead rather than over the crown. Follow the specific measuring diagram provided for the piece whenever one is available.

4. Measure Temple to Temple Around the Back

Place the tape at one temple and bring it around the back of your head to the opposite temple. This can help show how the back portion of the cap needs to sit and is especially useful when a more customized fit is being considered.

5. Measure the Nape

Measure across the lower hairline from one side of the nape to the other. Not every ready-to-wear size chart asks for this measurement, but it can be helpful for custom caps and more detailed fittings.

Tips for More Accurate Wig Measurements

Measure in inches if the brand's size chart uses inches, and avoid converting back and forth unless necessary. Keep the tape flat rather than twisted. Do not add extra room because you think the wig might feel tight. The manufacturer or fitter accounts for the way the cap is designed to sit.

If you normally wear a wig grip or another layer underneath your wig, ask whether you should measure with it in place. The answer may depend on the specific cap and fitting method.

What If You Are Between Sizes?

Do not assume that sizing up is always the best choice. Adjustment features, cap stretch, head shape and the specific brand can all affect the fit. Compare your complete measurements with the size chart and ask for guidance if you are close to the boundary between two sizes.

Measure First, Customize Second

Accurate measurements give you a much better starting point, but they are only one part of fit. Hairline placement, ear tabs, cap depth and personal comfort also matter.
