Hair Extensions Aftercare Guide

Invisible Bead Extensions (IBE®)

Daily Upkeep

Brushing

• Use an extension-safe brush
• Start at the ends, working upward in small sections
• Keep one hand at the base of the extension row to support the attachment points
• Brush 2–3× daily to prevent tangles and matting

Proper detangling dramatically reduces stress at the roots and extends wear time.

Washing Routine

We recommend having scheduled wash days

• Wash 1–2 times per week but even up to 3 times a week

• Use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, ideally products formulated for extensions, our favorite is Goldie Locks Shampoo & Conditioner
• Massage shampoo at the scalp and roots, then let suds gently run through the weft, repeat this step twice
• Apply conditioner mid-lengths to ends only — avoid the bead area. Once a week you should be replacing the conditioner with the Goldie Locks Signature Hair Mask
• Rinse thoroughly to prevent buildup

Using lightweight, quality products keeps extensions clean without weighing them down. Goldie Locks products are our favorite! The Leave in Conditioner, Signature Serum & Blow Dry Spray are some of the favorites!

Styling Tips

• Always use a heat protectant before hot tools, Goldie Lock Blowdry Spray is great for this!
• Keep tools at moderate temperatures
• Avoid excessive heat directly on attachment points
• Moisturize daily with Goldie Locks Signature Serum to combat dryness

This preserves the integrity of both extension and natural hair.

Nighttime Care

• Braid loosely or tie in a low ponytail before sleep
• Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase or bonnet
• Never sleep with wet hair

These habits reduce friction and prevent tangles while you rest.

Swimming & Travel

• Rinse hair with clean water before swimming
• Wear a swim cap if you can
• After swimming, rinse and condition as soon as possible

Chlorine and saltwater can dehydrate and dull hair — protection and aftercare matter.

Sunscreen Ingredients Not Safe for Hair Extensions

🚫 Avobenzone

Common in chemical sunscreens.
When it mixes with minerals in water or sweat, it can cause pink or peach staining on blonde or light extensions. This reaction is especially noticeable on high-end light hair.

🚫 Octocrylene

Can contribute to dryness and buildup.
Notorious for leaving a film that dulls shine and attracts grime around rows.

🚫 Oxybenzone

Can break down hair fibers over time and create buildup that’s difficult to remove.

🚫 Homosalate & Octisalate

These chemical UV filters can leave residue and contribute to discoloration on lighter extension shades.

🚫 Heavy Oils (Coconut Oil, Mineral Oil, etc.)

Not a UV filter, but often included in spray sunscreens.
These can:
• Weigh extensions down
• Cause slipping near beads

IBE® especially does not love oil saturation near the bead area.

Safer Options for Extension Clients

✔ Mineral sunscreens with Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide
✔ Oil-free, lightweight formulas
✔ Lotion formulas applied to skin only
✔ Spray sunscreen applied carefully away from hairline

Maintenance Appointments

• Regular move-ups or reinstall appointments help maintain comfort, blend, and the health of your natural hair
• Most clients return around every 6–9 weeks to refresh rows and prevent slipping
• Check in sooner if you notice looseness or discomfort

Routine professional care ensures long-lasting results.

 What to Avoid

• Sulfates, parabens, and heavy oils at the matrix
• Scrubbing at the beads or aggressively brushing wet hair
• Skipping maintenance appointments
• DIY removal or tightening

Proper care leads to softer, more seamless extension wear that feels natural and lasts beautifully.
